Step 2: MSDE Install
If you do not already have SQL server you will need to install the Free MSDE from Microsoft.
Once the SQL database environment is installed we can install Open Elms.
Click on the download icon ONLY IF you do not already have MS SQL Server. Unzip the files and run the file "setup.exe".
Step 3: Open Elms Learning Management System Install

Step 4: Connecting to your SQL Database using Enterprise Manager
You will now need to restore the backed up database using Enterprise Manager.
If you do not have this tool we recommend you download a Free utility such as DbaMgr2K by clicking on download icon.
Step 5: Restoring the Back up of the Database
Select the Server and then right click on the database instance where you wish to create the database. Select "Restore Database" and (if you are a new customer) choose the LMS_V5_1.bak file you installed into the "/database" folder on your web-server.
Once this is done make a note of the "Server Instance", "Database Instance Name", "User name" and "User's password". You will need these later.
Click on the play icon to see how this is done.
N.B. Instead if you are updating from a previous version of e-Office Safety, e-start or open elms then restore the file "LMS_V5_1_BLANK.bak" database found in the "/database" sub folder. Then open the query "LMS_V4 to LMS_V5_1.sql" in Notepad and edit it, replacing "LMS_V4" with your old v4 database's name, and “LMS_V5” with newly restored version 5 blank database and then execute ONLY Once.
Step 6: Linking Database to e-LMS
Now the database has been set up, it must be linked to the program. To do this open the file 'db.inc' in the 'lms' folder using Notepad and change the database connection string to match your own.
Click on the play icon to see how this is done.
Step 7: Create the e-LMS Website
Open Internet Information Services Manager (IIS). This can be found in Start > Control Panel > Administration Tools.
Drill down to the Default Website, if you do not see the "lms" folder, right click and select "New" > "Virtual Directory" and follow the instructions.
Click on the play icon to see how this is done.
Step 8: Start the Program
In Internet Information Services Manager (IIS) open the lms folder and find the file 'login.asp'. Right click on this file and select 'Browse' - the program should now open. Make a note of the URL for distribution later.
Click on the play icon to see how this is done.
N.B. If the site does not load search our Knowledge base at www.openelms.org for help.
Step 9: Test the Program
The Learning Management System - e-LMS - has 3 access levels. You can test these by logging in as 'test1', 'reporter' and 'admin'.
Click on the play icon to see how this is done.
N.B. If you have the Active Directory login activated, log in using the ID "admin" from the standard_login.asp page and add "employee", "reporter" and "administrator" rights to your account. Contact us for help.
